Maple Leaf Tree
Tradeworks Training Society is based in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside and operates training courses in carpentry for women and youth with barriers to employment. We run a social enterprise and sell the products made by the staff and students, which include sustainable, hand-made, wooden Christmas ornaments. Each ornament is unique, and comes with a story of hope and rebirth.
A majority of our participants come from various backgrounds with issues such as personal trauma, addictions, and homelessness. There are also single mothers and new Canadians looking to build a better future. Tradeworks provides them with training in life and employment skills, and hands-on work experience in the of trade carpentry.
Toni Glick, once a program participant, now works as a lead designer and principal laser engraver in the Workshop. Toni came to Tradeworks in 2006 in search of training so she could gain employment to support her young child. Today, Toni mentors and trains other women in Tradeworks’ Training programs. Toni wanted to give the new ornament line a distinctly west coast feel and drew on the yoga theme. Made from discarded pine beetle wood, these whimsical decorations start at $7.99.
